HOW IT’S RAISED

Typically, concrete raising projects are completed within a few hours from start to finish, ensuring minimal disruption to your schedule. With polyurethane concrete raising, a foam material is injected under the slab. Upon mixing, the material expands, filling voids and lifting the concrete. This durable foam maintains its density permanently, weighing only about 2 lbs. per cubic foot.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is concrete lifting and how does it work?

Concrete lifting (also called slab lifting or mudjacking) is a process that raises and levels sunken or uneven concrete surfaces without the need for full replacement. Northland Companies uses foam injection technology, where a specialized expanding foam is injected beneath the sunken slab through small drilled holes. As the foam expands, it fills voids in the soil and lifts the concrete back to its original level. The holes are then patched, leaving a clean, level surface.

What concrete surfaces can Northland Companies lift and level?

We can lift and level a wide range of concrete surfaces, including driveways, sidewalks, garage floors, patio slabs, pool decks, front stoops, and steps. If your concrete has sunken due to soil settlement, erosion, or freeze-thaw activity — which is very common in Minnesota — concrete lifting is a fast and cost-effective way to restore it.

Is concrete lifting cheaper than replacing the concrete entirely?

Yes, in most cases, concrete lifting is significantly more affordable than full slab replacement. Replacement involves demolition, debris removal, forming, pouring new concrete, and curing time — all of which add up quickly. Concrete lifting requires no demolition, produces minimal waste, and can typically be completed in a fraction of the time. It’s an excellent solution for slabs that are structurally sound but have shifted out of position.

How long does concrete lifting take?

Most residential concrete lifting jobs are completed within a few hours. Unlike poured concrete replacements, which require days of curing before use, foam-lifted concrete is ready to be walked on or driven over very shortly after completion — often within 15 to 30 minutes. This makes it a convenient option with minimal disruption to your daily routine.

Why does concrete sink in Minnesota?

Concrete sinking in Minnesota is most commonly caused by soil settlement beneath the slab, erosion from water runoff, and the repeated freeze-thaw cycles our climate produces. Over years of expansion and contraction, voids can form in the soil beneath concrete, causing it to drop or tilt. Tree root activity and poor compaction during original construction are also contributing factors.

Is a sunken sidewalk or driveway a safety hazard?

Yes. Uneven concrete surfaces — even a small height difference between slabs — are a leading cause of trip-and-fall accidents on residential and commercial properties. In Minnesota, settled concrete near entryways can also collect water that freezes into ice in winter, creating an additional slip hazard. Addressing sunken concrete promptly protects both the safety of your family and guests and limits your liability as a property owner.
